Hawkins shows off latest lingerie trends.

Jennifer Hawkins says wearing the right lingerie under your clothes can make a woman feel sexy all day long.
“I think it’s just about trying things on and seeing what you love and what you feel confident and comfortable in, and sort of rocking it,” she said at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival at Sydney’s Town Hall on Tuesday night.
“And what you feel cheeky in – I think that’s the biggest thing.
“It’s underneath your clothes so it makes you feel sexy throughout the day.”
Hawkins says when it comes to style, women should choose lingerie that makes them feel good.
The Australian model showed off her stunning figure for the Bendon Lingerie catwalk parade in the latest looks in the under-garment department.
Hawkins took to the runway in a snake and vibrant pink Lovable bra and brief set.
For spring and summer, Hawkins says colours are hot.
“Beautiful lace and trims always change different seasons but definitely colour is the biggest trend for summer, which I’m loving.”
Her number one lingerie tip for Australian women is to get a bra fitting.
“The right size is very, very important. That’s my biggest tip,” Hawkins says.
“Your body goes up and down so it’s nice to get fitted by a professional and then you know what size you are because you change.
“Your body changes month to month around different times and squeezing into the same size year in year out … you might be too big for it or too small, so it’s definitely important.”
The new Bendon Lingerie range showcased a wide variety of bras to suit most body shapes, from push-ups and wire-free, to the fun, feminine Evollove D to G collection.
Lacy Elle Macpherson Intimates were on display, along with tiny striped cotton trunks from Macpherson Men.
Wearing black lace blindfolds, the models also showed off the new Pleasure State pieces, which included a Cleopatre balconnet contour bra and “midi” brief in an earthy print, as well as a black Grecia baby doll dress for special evenings.
There was plenty of red lace and polka dots by Lovable; Bendon offered a touch of fuchsia; while sheer black pieces and sweet bows were across the entire collection.
Wearing a sexy, white corset, with pink touches to the tips of her golden curls, Hawkins closed the show by blowing a cheeky kiss to the audience.

Young Sunshine Coast model

Debate rages over teen modelling.

A Young Sunshine Coast model, a prominent modelling agency and a child psychologist have weighed into a heated debate about how young is too young to enter the cut-throat world of fashion modelling.Controversy was sparked following the announcement that 13-year-old Brisbane schoolgirl Kirsty Thatcher won the 2012 Dolly magazine search contest. The competition was famously axed by former editor Mia Freedman just years after the discovery of Miranda Kerr in 1997, because she thought 13-year-olds were too young to enter. Now a decade on and it seems Miss Thatcher will follow in Kerr’s footsteps as the youngest of six finalists selected from thousands of teenage girls around the country, starting up the child beauty war once again.
Successful Coast model Caity Sanderson (pictured), who walked in her first bikini catwalk at just 14, said 13 was the right age to begin a modelling career.”I did my first photo shoot at 13, it was very beautiful in a field of flowers, the photographer was great and talked me through the shoot and I felt very comfortable,” Miss Sanderson said.
“From there I continued with the photo shoots and when I was asked to model in a bikini they were very considerate and never pressured me into anything.
“I was ready to model at 13, I was tall and I had very adult bone structure, which is the same for Kirsty and the reason why she looks so much older in photographs.”
Coast model agent Serena Keenan agreed, saying many models knew they wanted to model as a career by the age 13.
“They know if they want to model and I can’t see anything wrong with launching their careers then,” Mrs Keenan said.
“What better way for them to have this sort of direction in life and the self-confidence that comes hand in hand with modelling.”
However USC child phycologist Rachael Sharman said 13 was far too young to launch a career.
“This is an adult industry – we don’t ask young men to start apprenticeships as a mechanic or plumber at 13 and that is because they are not ready,” Dr Sharman said.
“I cannot think of any other profession where 13 is considered an appropriate age to start working in an adult industry and why some people think this is, is ridiculous.”
Current Dolly editor Tiffany Dunk defended the decision to revive the competition this year.
She told media the competition had changed considerably, the magazine now working with the Butterfly Foundation which focused on body image issues and the media, to ensure it presented a “positive role model for young girls.”

Model Search

July 11th, 2012 by admin

Model teen not stuck for options.
The 13-year-old winner of the Dolly magazine Model Search has a range of back-up options if a career on the catwalk does not work out.
Brisbane Girls Grammar student Kirsty Thatcher, who was named the winner on Monday, has broad interests in the arts and sport.
Kirsty shares her time between ballet and the piano, rowing, basketball and acting out Shakespeare with the Queensland Theatre Company.
“I can definitely see modelling as a career for me, but if it doesn’t work out there are other things I could try as well,” Kirsty said after being named from five finalists at Sydney’s Museum Of Contemporary Art.
A range of interests was a key criterion in the nationwide contest, revived under the current Dolly editor Tiffany Dunk 10 years after it was axed by her predecessor Mia Freedman.
It followed controversy caused by the rise of another 13-year-old winner in 1997, Miranda Kerr, with critics claiming the young model was exploited in a series of provocative magazine shoots.
The competition now focuses on amateur beauties who can shine “on the inside and out” that readers of Dolly can relate to, says Dunk.
“We were looking for someone who’s confident and has a healthy body image with interests outside modelling,” she said.
Kirsty will feature heavily in the magazine as a model and columnist after she beat more than 500 hopefuls to win the contest.

Alex Yuryeva

Model Call: Alex Yuryeva.

Last Monday, while the fashion world waited with bated breath for Raf Simons’ debut at Dior, Alex Yuryeva had a backstage sneak peak at one of the most highly anticipated couture collections in recent memory. “I was superexcited to see the clothes because we’ve all been waiting for over a year, thinking ‘Who’s it going to be?,’” Yuryeva (Silent Models) told WWD over the phone after the show. “He brings something entirely new. It’s a nice change for Dior.” We got the inside scoop from the Ukrainian stunner on everything from the packed casting to the Dior Red lip.
WWD: What do you like most about doing the couture shows?
Alex Yuryeva: Being in Paris in general and couture is a bit less busy than ready-to-wear so you can take your time, enjoy the city. Couture brings out all the designers’ pure creativity. You see these beautiful dresses up close that most people never get to see and you learn so much more about fashion and the craftsmanship, seeing the designers work on these pieces in front of your eyes.
What was the Dior fitting like?
A.Y.: With couture, the fittings are usually very last minute. And I was actually lucky because mine was early, four o’clock in the afternoon so I wasn’t there all night. If they don’t finish everything and if it’s not perfect on you, they don’t let you go. It needs to be amazing, then you can leave. It was actually great for Dior, though, because everything fit us all perfectly so they only needed to make little changes. Raf’s always nice to the models, always asking, ‘How are you?’ and talks to us a lot. He pays attention to our personalities. It makes us all feel a lot more comfortable and relaxed.
Tell me about the casting.
A.Y.: It was [over the course of] a few days, maybe three. I think almost all of the girls who were in Paris for couture came because it was a huge line. It was a really, really big casting and you see everyone, all your friends. I was there for two or three hours. But they really take care of the models; they always have water and food for us. So we were all waiting and all excited to go inside and see. When you went in, the casting director gave you this small dress to try on so they can see how your body is, then you gave them your book. They asked you to walk and if they liked you, they took your picture and asked you to try something on from the collection and asked you to walk again.
What did they have you try on?
A.Y.: They asked me to try on this dress but it wasn’t even close to finished yet, so I didn’t really see what it would end up looking like. I was thinking, ‘Wow, yes! Maybe I’m going to see an outfit here!’
But you didn’t wear a dress in the show?
A.Y.: I wore this really beautiful suit. It was really cool. It was really comfortable, too. The pants fit perfectly. The details made it so special.
Your hair and makeup were pretty amazing, too.
A.Y.: The lips were a beautiful shade. They put red, then added a little coral color, then a bit of purple. There were many layers. It was a mix of so many colors. But after they put it on, you’re done. You couldn’t eat or even drink, without a straw at least!

Nowadays models

May 10th, 2012 by admin

Stitched up couture at Paris Fashion Week.

The winds of change are blowing through the grand salons of the French haute couture houses: the era of theatricality and the big catwalk shows is gradually being replaced by a mood of intimacy and exclusivity as the couturiers take the models off the podiums and present the clothes up close and personal.

Nowadays models brush past the audience in their finery so close that you can almost reach out to touch, feel and appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship from their ateliers.

Nowhere was this change more apparent than at Christian Dior, where Raf Simons, the avant garde Belgian designer opened a fresh chapter in the story of the house creating a new New Look every bit as scintillating as when the original New Look revolutionised fashion in 1947.

In small, flower-decked rooms scented with roses, mimosa and delphiniums Simons set out a fresh agenda for Dior. His modernist streamlined aesthetic bypassed the eras of his predecessors and went straight back to Christian Dior himself. In his last few collections for Jil Sander he had been exploring mid-century couture updating it with sculpted lines and intense hues. At Dior you realise how close the two designers are aesthetically speaking. The full-skirted ballgown was chopped short and slipped over elegant black cigarette pants for a modern look, while the iconic, shapely Bar jacket from 1947 was re-worked into a beautifully moulded tuxedo that flares out gently over the hips, highlighting the architecture of Dior’s original design. Sitting in the audience was the nonagenarian couturier Pierre Cardin who was the tailor that made the original Bar jacket with Dior. He nodded in approval as the new jacket went by and spoke enthusiastically to Simons after the show.

Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz, one of the many designers in the audience that included Marc Jacobs, Donatella Versace, Azzedine Alaia and Olivier Theyskens, described the collection as “absolutely poetic. It was perfection.”

Sidney Toledano the chief executive and president of Christian Dior said the most satisfying moment for him was watching the looks of approval on the faces of the designers around him. Hiring Raf Simons he says “was the right decision and he brings a new aesthetic to the house”.

Ungaro

May 10th, 2012 by admin

Raf Simons ushers in a mood for quiet realism. There is a sense that real, albeit very rich women, will be wearing these clothes. The fantasies of collections from John Galliano, Christian Lacroix and to some extent the latter days of Ungaro are a thing of the past. We only see that today in collections like those of Jean Paul Gaultier, who is excused some of his more extreme spectacles because he produces the most divine tuxedos and lush evening gowns.
There are about 1000 haute couture customers worldwide, which doesn’t sound a lot, but couture is about quality and exclusivity. It is a fine balance: too many customers and that exclusivity disappears. “Since the financial crisis we have actually found more new customers and young customers coming to haute couture,” says Bruno Pavlovsky, the ‘presidente des activites mode’ at Chanel. It has surprised the couture houses.
“There are fewer customers from existing markets like America and Europe and more from China, Russia, the Middle East, South East Asia and Brazil. It is becoming global,” he says.
The current feeling for sophisticated refinement is very clear in collections from Armani Prive and Valentino. Giorgio Armani’s silhouette is more relaxed this season with loose silk and black velvet jackets slipped over fluid trousers and long skirts presented in shades seen at the hours of dusk pink, blue, midnight and black. Each model wore veils that twinkled with jet and white crystals on the moonlit catwalk.
Inky blue and black give an air of mystery to the Valentino woman who might normally wear red or pale nude shades. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli presented elegant capes over silk dresses that looked spare but luxurious at the same time. Purity and refinement are key elements of their aesthetic.

Luxurious

May 10th, 2012 by admin

Giambattista Valli and Stephane Rolland share a flare for sculpting their silhouettes. Rolland’s are streamlined, architecturally inspired gowns in ivory and black crepe sprouting silicone fringing. His finale piece was the Chinese actress Fan Bingbing looking like an alabaster goddess in a dramatic white hourglass gown and sweeping cape. Valli, meanwhile, shapes his Monet-style flower-printed silhouette with giant ruffles creating a bucolic scene with models’ veiled heads whimsically studded with butterflies. Oversized ruffles hugged necklines, framed skirts or completely cocooned the upper body.
Haute couture is not simply about the cutting, but also the luxurious embroideries and embellishment, something that these intimate presentations at Chanel, Givenchy and Elie Saab allow you close enough to admire. Riccardo Tisci’s static presentations make it easier to appreciate the dramatic 3D woven leather passementerie and ombre silk fringing found in his luxurious gypsy-inspired collection for Givenchy. Elie Saab similarly brings the audience nearer to his lovely, delicately beaded Chantilly lace and gold brocade gowns.
Karl Lagerfeld produced swing coats and 40s-style belted jackets in tweed, which sounds heavy but for the fact the tweed is embroidered on tulle. These jackets swung over elegant lace and crystal evening trousers and slender evening dresses. The dresses are a testimony to the skills of the flou atelier where fragile laser cut organza is delicately appliqued to tulle, and slim column dresses are constructed from tiers of tiny bands of chiffon and sequins.
The talents of the flou were clear to see in Donatella Versace’s Atelier show with patches of pearl, crystal mesh and silicone shimmering on her goddess gowns. It was a poignant occasion for Versace as her house was making its Paris comeback at the Ritz where her brother, Gianni, used to present his collections. She admitted she was emotional, but a celeb-packed front row that included Jessica Alba, Christina Hendricks and Pierce Brosnan had a little of that old razzmatazz that couture doesn’t want to lose altogether.

Irina Shayk

Irina Shayk does her best to upstage the

Hunger Games stars in a white plunging peplum dress.

She may not actually have anything to do with the movie but she made a red carpet entrance that grabbed everyone’s attention.

Irina Shayk did her best to upstage the stars of The Hunger Games, as she wore a rather revealing dress.

The 26-year-old was attending a screening of the new film thrown by The Cinema Society and Calvin Klein Collection in New York. The Sports Illustrated model added some sex appeal to proceedings in a very low cut  and well fitted white peplum dress.

As well as showing off her chest, the outfit also revealed her long legs which she accentuated with a pair of red stilettos.

The tight fitting dress also drew attention to the models derriere which she was more than happy to display for the camera.

Irina’s simple colour palette choice and pulled back hairstyle made her look like the star of the show, however, the actual leading lady fought back with her own fashion statement.

Jennifer Lawrence, 21, wore a pleated figure skater style minidress with a pair of black strappy sandals for the event, where she posed on the red carpet.

Maybe Jennifer can give Irina some tips on how to become an actress, as the Russian model seems to attend a lot of premieres and screenings.

Last year she attended a Cinema Society film screening of Nicole Kidman’s Snow Flower And The Secret Fan in New York, and earlier this year she was seen at the W.E. premiere.

Irina, who is dating Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, may have been a shining star at the screening, but it is Lawrence who is expected to become hot property after her turn in the film.

Based on the book by the same name, with 23.5 million copies in print in the U.S., the movie set the record for first-day advance sales beating Twilight when tickets went on sale on February 22.

The Hunger Games takes place in the ruins of what once was North America, according to the movie’s official website.

It depicts a world in which teenagers are chosen to fight each other to the death as a form of government intimidation.

Protagonist Katniss Everdeen’s younger sister, Primrose, is originally chosen to take part but her sibling volunteers in her place to compete in the games.

Lawrence, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2010 for Winter’s Bone, realises that this part is the one which will bring her to a Kristen Stewart level of fame.

She recently told Glamor magazine: ‘I feel like I am in the eye of the hurricane right now. It’s daunting.’

She said ‘I knew that as soon as I said “yes,” my life would change and I walked around thinking “It’s not too late, I could still go back and do indies. I haven’t said “yes” yet, it’s not too late.’

Fendi

Fendi

Top designer Karl Lagerfeld thinks a good quality fashion has to be a bit strange. On Fendi’s fall collection, Lagerfeld proved this axioms, using various contrast fabrics in one outfit. Natasha Poly was wearing a blue feathers coat, emerald green skirt, printed pantyhose and bourdeaux high heels . According to her opinion, the collection is brilliant, especially in makeup terms. The clean and beautiful makeup is very unusual in fashion shows, so it makes all of the models look really fresh, she said in in interview for FashionTV.As you can see, whether it’s a baroque theme, dark and Gothic chic or strange or an unusual fashion point of view, Natasha Poly on the catwalk. At the age of 27 it is great to see a mature model, who manage to keep her name among the hottest and most wanted names on the top models list. Though she misses her family and Russian food, it seems like we will have the great pleasure of seeing Natasha Poly on the stages for few more seasons. And who knows – maybe we will also see her designing at some point…

Gucci

Gucci

Gucci have presented a dark and romantic collection for fall 2012. Natasha Poly modeled 2 very different outfits, both of them made her look breath taking. The first outfit was a bit muscular and included tight black pants, up to knee black leather boots and a wide leather coat with military motifs on it.

The second outfit was super feminine and emphasized Poly’s great silhouette. It was a black chiffon elegant maxi dress. This time Poly’s one shoulder and back were exposed in a sexy-but-sophisticated way. The pale makeup and dark lips added a Gothic dimension to the outfit and was the perfect contrast to the gentle and flowy fabrics.

Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana

The Italian label had presented a magnificent runway show, on which Natasha Poly wore a white see-through chiffon dress with flowers tapestry on it and a black body stocking beneath. Gold floral headband and matching earrings have completed the baroque overlook Dolce & Gabbana wanted to create. The second time Poly got on stage was during the end of the show. All models were wearing gold and black combinations, including Poly who wore a beautiful mini dress and looked stunning.

Natasha Poly is one of the world’s most stunning top models. The Russian blonde has been on the runways since the age of 15, won FashionTV First Face countdown 3 times consecutively, and glamor on the catwalks of the best fashion designers one season after another. Here are 3 of Natasha’s best runway outfits from Milan Fall 2012 Fashion Week.

It is always amazing to see how a model can transform herself and adjust to various outfits and fashion visions. Eight years after she first walked on a professional runway (at Emanuel Ungaro’s show), Natasha Poly is still one of the hottest names in fashion industry. Last season it was almost impossible to watch a show without her on the catwalk. She walked for Lanvin, Chanel, Viktor&Rolf and Prada, among others. Arizona Muse

Meet The New Face Of Estée Lauder: Arizona Muse.

It’s all about the muse – Arizona Muse, that is. Not content with gracing the covers of Korean, Australian, French, Russian and British Vogue, the model is now the new face of Estée Lauder. Born in Arizona and aptly named after the desert state, Ms Muse’s ascent to the top has been swift to say the least. After modelling in Chanel, Armani and Dior SS12 couture shows, she caught the eye of fashion industry heavyweights and is now tipped to be the next big supermodel (remember, you heard it here first!). And with Estée Lauder now bagging the beauty, she’ll join the extensive list of glamorous ladies who’ve previously represented the brand, including Elizabeth Hurley and Joan Smalls. So with the world at her feet, we’re sure Arizona’s name will soon be on everyone’s lips.

Former Miss Russia Anna Malova

March 22nd, 2012 by admin

Russia’s bad girl gets last warning.

Former Miss Russia Anna Malova has been given “just one more chance” by a US court to clean up her act and get back into drug rehab.

The 39-year old is addicted to Vicodin, and appeared in court after it was alleged she was hoarding large amounts of her prescribed drugs at the rehab centre in the New York where she is currently being held.

The former Miss Universe finalist was nearly kicked out of the drug rehab program last year after hitting a fellow female patient. The bad girl of the fashion industry was to complete her 18-month long rehab course and avoid prison, as well as deportation back to Russia. Malova was halfway through her medical program when she was jailed last December.

The deal was that once she completed the rehab course, the US court would drop charges of theft, forgery and the illegal purchase of prescription drugs in America.

The judge warned Malova that if she doesn’t complete her medical program at the rehab, and comes back with a bad report on May 1, she would be found guilty.

Malova was once one of Russia’s most promising models. After moving to America, soon after winning the Miss Russia contest in 1998, things changed. The former model, who also qualified as a doctor in Russia, doesn’t have a license to practice medicine in America.

In 2010, Malova was detained and charged with 44 offenses, including theft, forgery and illegal purchase and possession of limited-circulation drugs. The Russian beauty, struggling with drug addiction, denied all the accusations, but ended up in jail after being caught again in 2011.

World record bridal

March 22nd, 2012 by admin

World record bridal train displayed in Romania.

A hot air balloon floated over downtown Bucharest on Tuesday carrying a model wearing what is now regarded as the world’s longest bridal train.
The 1.85-mile-long (nearly 3-kilometer) ivory train on the model’s wedding gown billowed out over a main boulevard in Romania’s capital.
The Guinness Book of World Records on Monday recognized the item on the silk and lace gown as the longest train, beating the previous record held by a Dutch designer. But pedestrians didn’t seem to make much of Tuesday’s media event, which was organized by the artifact’s creators: the Andree Salon fashion house and the organizers of this year’s biannual Wedding Fair in Bucharest.

A few bystanders looked up at the balloon, but many others ignored it.

The train, which took 100 days to create, was crafted by a team of 10 seamstresses, said salon spokeswoman Lavinia Lascae. The lace was imported from France, while taffeta and other fabrics were purchased from Italy, costing a total of 24,000 lei ($7,364.48 or €5,580), she added.Beating a Dutch designer to the record had an added dimension for Romanians, as many are still angry after the Netherlands opposed its entry into the European Union’s visa-free travel zone. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte recently demanded that Romania and Bulgaria do more to reform their justice systems and combat corruption and organized crime before he would support integration.

“If the Netherlands does not allow us into Europe, we’ll take them out of the world records book,” said Alin Caraman, an organizer of the Wedding Fair.

Anorexic models

March 22nd, 2012 by admin

Topless protesters crash Milan Fashion week in demo against anorexic models.

Topless feminists clashed with police as they protested against the use of anorexic models outside the Versace fashion show in Milan yesterday.

The protesters, from the feminist group Femen, wore jeans and handwritten slogans such as ‘Fashion = Fascism’ and ‘Anorexia’ scrawled across their bare chests.

The three attractive women – understood to be model themselves – chanted outside the high-end fashion show while holding aloft handmade placards with the same mottos and ‘Models do not go to brothels’.

But Italian police forcibly blocked the protesters when they approached the entrance to the Versace Fall-winter 2012-2013 show during the Milan Womenswear Fashion Week.

Donatella Versace’s own daughter and heir to the fashion throne, Allegra, has been battling anorexia for years.

The fashion house sparked controversy at previous fashion shows last year over its use of incredibly thin models.

Femen is a Kiev-based provocative women’s movement in Ukraine, founded in 2008 by Anna Hutsol.

The organisation became internationally known for organizing topless protests against sex tourists, international marriage agencies, sexism and other social, national and international ills. The organisation states its goals as ‘to develop leadership, intellectual and moral qualities of the young women in Ukraine’ and ‘to build up the image of Ukraine, the country with great opportunities for women’.

It now appears that campaigning against anorexia has shot to the forefront of their agenda following the continued use of size zero models in fashion shows across the globe despite increasing media and social pressure to put an end to the practice.

The protest comes just two days before America’s National Eating Disorder Awareness (NEDA) Week that starts tomorrow.

Following New York Fashion week, the association said the American fashion industry was making steps ‘in the right direction’, after the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) set new guidelines to ensure the health of runway models.

The guidelines include encouraging models who may have an eating disorder to seek professional help and supplying healthy snacks and drinks backstage at shows.

It also recommends that fashion houses do not hire models under the age of 16 for runway shows and not allowing models under 18 to work past midnight.

Calls are now being made for the guidelines to become mandatory.

Lynn Grefe, president and CEO of NEDA, said: ‘There are still great strides to be made and we believe that eating disorder screenings for minors should be mandatory.

‘Although these guidelines are good ‘suggestions’, no real health protections exist in this industry for those under 18.

‘That is particularly worrisome in an industry that is not only known for extreme thinness, in fact, it’s practically required – putting its models at dramatically increased risk of developing an illness that has the highest mortality rate of any other mental illness. Minors deserve protection.’

Western Canada Fashion Week

March 22nd, 2012 by admin

Edmonton designers embrace the spotlight at Western Canada Fashion Week.

Elaborately clad models strut down the runway while hair and makeup artists work at top speed backstage. Designers rush to and fro as media fill the venue, ready to document every stylish step.

This isn’t a scene from some faraway fashion capital; this is what you can expect March 29 when Edmonton’s Western Canada Fashion Week kicks off for another eight-day showcase of local designers.

Edmonton’s bi-annual style extravaganza — now in its 14th season — has long been hailed a major achievement for the city’s fashion scene. But there’s more to the event than just glitz and glamour.

“Our goal is to create an industry here in Edmonton that fosters local talent,” says Sandra Sing Fernandes, WCFW’s founder and executive director.

“If we don’t support our local designers we’ll lose them, and that would be a shame.”

Known for supporting emerging designers, models and beauty professionals from across the country, the fashion week is now receiving international attention as well. This season, designers from New York City, the Ukraine and even Nigeria will be showing their collections, a feat Fernandes credits to WCFW’s robust growth.

“Having international designers calling us and wanting to show with us was pretty amazing. That means we’re making an impact that reaches farther than just our city,” Fernandes says.

“Not a lot of fashion weeks in small cities can boast that.”

International designers Angelique Chmielewski, Bano eeMee (both NYC), Olga DeNogga (Ukraine) and Chuks Collins (Nigeria) will be hitting the catwalk this month, along with WCFW veterans Stanley Carroll, Malorie Urbanovitch and Derek Jagodzinsky, to name a few.

Jagodzinsky has shown his LUXX ready-to-wear collection at fashion week for the past two seasons, and believes the event is an invaluable resource for emerging designers.

“It’s helped me put on shows and learn more about fashion and the process of creating a collection,” he says. “Western Canada Fashion Week is an amazing place to grow as a designer and gain exposure for your work.”

But more than just a place where designers can thrive, WCFW is looking to nurture the careers of all those involved in the arts.

“We need creative people; it’s what makes a city,” Fernandes says. “When a city lacks culture people start to leave, but if we support our local talent and celebrate their many achievements — be they art, design or theatre-based — they’ll stay and make our city that much more culturally rich.”

“All the big fashion capitals like Paris, New York and London support the arts and their (creative) communities, and it’s really important for us to support local talent as well if we want to grow,” Jagodzinsky agrees.

“As we become stronger as designers, we’ll be able to pave the way for younger generations of designers in Edmonton too.”

After years of struggling to get WCFW where it is today — with a myriad of designers, models, beauty professionals, volunteers and sponsors at its disposal — Fernandes says one thing with conviction.

“If you can make it here you can make it anywhere.”

It ended on March 18. This fashion week attracted some international buyers, including those from Tsvetnoy Central Market in Moscow and Galleries Lafayette in France. About 40 local designers showed their fall-winter collections during five days of fashion marathon, held in Mystetsky Arsenal museum and followed by numerous parties.

Linda Evangelista

Linda Evangelista biography

Bio:
Evangelista was born to Italian parents and was raised in a working-class, traditional Catholic family in St. Catharines, Ontario. She knew she wanted to become a model when she was 12 years old. Evangelista got into the modeling industry when she was discovered by a talent agent at the 1978 Miss Teen Niagara Contest.

Evangelista later moved to New York City and signed with Elite Model Management there. She then moved to Paris, to further her career. She also appeared in music videos with George Michael.

Along with Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell, Linda is regarded as one of the few, true supermodels that changed the face of fashion in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The triumvirate of model friends that comprises Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington was affectionately dubbed “The Trinity” and is commonly credited as responsible for sparking supermodel mania. The Trinity pushed for better wages for models and for better projects and subsequently Evangelista was called the founder of the supermodel “union”.

Evangelista uttered the quote, “We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day” (often misquoted as: “We don’t get out of bed for less than…” or “I don’t get out of bed for less than…”) Spoken in Vogue (1990) to Jonathan Van Meyer, talking about money and how she and a few other models were calling the shots and changing the game.

In the late 1980s, she cut all her hair off to brandish a little-boy style haircut and was promptly cancelled from all the important runway shows that season. This was the first of her many, many dramatic hairstyle changes. Within months, she appeared on magazine covers everywhere and many women emulated the hairstyle.

Elle MacPherson

Elle MacPherson biography

Bio:
Eleanor Gow was born March 29, 1964, in Sydney, Australia. Elle’s original plan was to study pre-law at Sydney University, but when the 18-year old, 6-foot beauty was discovered in Aspen, Colorado, she was immediately signed to the Click modeling agency.

She soon became a staple of Elle magazine, posing for the magazine for 6 years. While her talent as a model was undeniable, her marriage to the fashion magazine’s creative director, Gilles Bensimon, further secured her relationship with the magazine.

She ventured into the world of exercise videos, motivating and teaching people how to stay fit to hopefully end up with a body like hers (probably something every woman would love). She showed off her body on the cover of the much coveted Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition in 1994, with models Kathy Ireland and Rachel Hunter.

Already having achieved supermodel status, Elle knew that the glamorous modeling industry has high turnover so she set her sights on other projects. Since the crossover from modeling to acting is a popular and usually successful one, Elle decided to perform in front of film cameras as well as fashion photographers. She first appeared on the silver screen in the 1990 Woody Allen film Alice (the spectacled director personally picked her for the part), but the part required nothing more than a “walk-by.”

Still, that was a start, and in 1994, “The Body” was required to gain 20 pounds for her meatier role in Sirens, co-staring Hugh Grant. In 1996 she appeared in a remake of Jane Eyre and starred opposite Ben Stiller in the comedy, If Lucy Fell. That year she also appeared in The Mirror Has To Faces, with Barbra Streisand and Jeff Bridges.

Wanting to branch out into other industries, Elle used her business skills to become chair of a line of lingerie called, Elle Macpherson Intimates. Based in Australia, the company has grown into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. Elle is also associated with Montgomery Ward, a clothing line ranging from sportswear to intimates.

Finding time somewhere between all these projects, Elle joined fellow supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell in developing the theme restaurant, the Fashion Cafe.

Signed with Miramax, the leggy model/actress was the object of Batman’s affection in 1997′s Batman & Robin, and co-starred with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin in The Edge.

Elle was recently seen last season on the sitcom Friends, in the recurring role of Joey’s new roommate.

As for Elle’s personal life, she and Gilles Bensimon got divorced, and Elle has since had two ex-fiances, Eric Miller and Tim Jeffries, and has dated Sean Penn. She is now with her long-time companion, Swiss financier Arpade “Arki” Busson, the father of her son Flynn.

Laetitia Casta

Laetitia Casta biography

Bio:
Laetitia was raised in Normandie and Corsica, France, in the middle of an animal-filled forest, Laetitia has a down-home charm that’s truly infectious. At the age of fifteen, Laetitia was discovered while vacationing with her family on a beach in Corsica, “the island of beauty”, in France.

A modeling agent from the Madison Models’ Agency approached her, and handed her father a business card with an invitation to bring his daughter to Paris for some test shoots. Once her father finally agreed to the agency taking some test photographs, her unmistakable potential was recognized by the founder of Madison Models – despite the fact that the shoot occurred without the aid of makeup and a designer wardroom which many models rely on to promote themselves. Within weeks of her first shoots, she was walking the runway for Jean-Paul Gaultier. However, her career did not begin to take off until the director of the French edition of Elle saw and was impressed with Laetitia’s looks.

Modeling contracts and appearances in magazines quickly ensued. Paul Marciano, founder and art director of Guess? who is incidentally accredited for the success of Claudia Schiffer – was taken by Casta’s near perfection. Her work in the Guess ad (she became their new front Girl) was her debut advertising campaign. Shot by Neil Kirk in Jamaica in October 1994. Thanks to Marciano, Guess has brought her international exposure and recognition.

In addition to Rolling Stone, Casta has adorned the pages of many other magazines, including the Italian edition of Glamour; Vogue; and Cosmopolitan. In 1998, she joined Kate Moss and Jennifer Aniston in becoming a spokesperson for cosmetics company L’Oreal. Casta’s relationship with designer Yves St. Laurent has helped to promote her career. Since 1998 Casta’s public outfits have all been personal Yves St. Laurent creations.

Her appearance in the exclusive Pirelli calendar, considered a collector’s item because it consists of beautiful shots taken by the most prestigious photographers, is considered one of Casta’s accomplishments. In the 1999 issue, themed Women Through the Decades, Casta is featured as representative of the 1950′s woman.

She lives in Paris with her parents, older brother and younger sister. Laetitia enjoys car racing with her friends, traveling, cooking with her mum and spending time with her younger sister. Laetitia also has a brown belt in Judo, she feels that it helps her in her modeling career to have control. To set limits for herself, to adopt a non-aggressive stance and to think with her mind not her emotions.

Laetitia became a French national obsession when she was elected by all the French mayors to be the representation of Marianne’s effigy, the French Republic symbol. Known for her great sense of humor and a good head on her shoulders, Laetitia can look forward to a bright future.

Claudia Schiffer biography

Bio:
After she was spotted as a potential model in a disco at the age of just seventeen, she completed her education by her mother’s wishes and then began to work as a model. She flew out to Paris for a trial photo shoot and soon after she appeared in the cover of French ELLE after being well received in Paris. After several other magazine appearances she quickly achieved supermodel status when she was selected by Karl Lagerfeld to become the new face of Chanel. Schiffer continued to become a world-famous supermodel, becoming instantly recognizable with her blue eyes, blond hair and tall figure.

In the early 1990s she starred in highly publicised Guess? jeans adverts in North America which created essential publicity for Schiffer. Soon after appearing in the campaigns, her name was launched worldwide, appearing on five magazine covers in the United States and seven covers around Europe. Her modelling career continued to grow and she was contracted to model for Revlon. She also became deeply involved in modelling for several catalogues and modelled on high profile catwalk shows. Schiffer has done catwalk modelling for Versace, Jil Sander, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren and Valentino. Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, the New York Times and People all saw Schiffer as the first model to make their covers. She has also appeared many times on covers of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Time.

Schiffer has also been the face of Mango, a chain of Spanish clothes stores and Accessorize, where she had her ears pierced especially for her Autumn/Winter 2006 Accessorize advertising campaign in 2006. Schiffer still holds a contract with L’Oreal and Ebel watches, and her billboard picture for Kenar has also hung over millions of tourists at Time Square. Since 1990, she has created a swimsuit calendar each year which she stars in and designs herself.

Her career continued to develop when she secured contracts with Pepsi appearing in advertisements promoting the brand, and has also danced with a cartoon version of Mickey Mouse in advertisements promoting Fanta for an estimated $2 million. She appeared nude in a 1998 Citroen advertisement, securing her a reputed ?3 million. Cindy Crawford

Сindy Crawford biography

Bio:
Cynthia Ann Crawford was born February 20, 1966, in De Kalb, Illinois. She was discovered by chance by a newspaper photographer, who noticed then 16-year old Cindy at work during her summer job of detasselling corn and took her a picture of her. The photo and the positive feedback surrounding Cindy’s photogenic talents were enough to convince her to quit her day job and take up modelling.

Thanks to two summers of modelling, represented by Elite Model Management in Chicago, the All-American beauty proved to also have brains — she traded in the glamorous life a model (at least temporarily) to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University, on scholarship.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Cindy was among the most popular supermodels, a ubiquitous presence on magazine covers, runways, and in fashion campaigns. In July, 1988, she became the first modern supermodel to pose nude for Playboy magazine, in a shoot by photographer Herb Ritts. In October, 1998 Crawford returned to the pages of Playboy for a second, more revealing nude pictorial. That issue was one of the magazine’s all-time biggest sellers.

From 1989 to 1995, Crawford was host of MTV’s House of Style. In the mid-1990s Crawford starred in famous Pepsi and Pepsi Stuff advertising. In 1995 Crawford took her first movie role in Fair Game. Her performance was panned by critics, and the film was a financial failure, with expenses of $50 million and $11 million takings at the box office. She has had several other minor acting jobs since then, none of which have been commercially or critically successful. The closest she has come to a commercially successful acting job has been her series of exercise videos.

She has been featured on the cover of many magazines, including Vogue, W, People, Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Cosmopolitan, and Allure. Cindy also appeared in many fashion campaigns during her career, including those for Gianni Versace, Escada, Revlon, Ink. She has also worked for Omega, Maybelline, and Clairol. Of her, famous designer Karl Lagerfeld has said: “She is a classical beauty and the all-American dream girl.” She was nicknamed “Baby Gia” when she entered the modeling industry because of her resemblance to the late supermodel, Gia Carangi.

In 2005, Cindy created a beauty product with Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh called Meaningful Beauty for Guthy-Renker.

Kate Moss biography

Bio:
Katherine Moss, who has become one of the most recognized and highest paid supermodels of the ’90s, was born in Croydon, Surrey, England, on January 16, 1974. She was discovered at the age of 14 by Sarah Doukas (the founder of Storm Model Management) in 1988, at JFK Airport in New York City, after a vacation in the Bahamas.
Moss’s career began when Corinne Day shot black and white photographs of her for British magazine The Face when she was 15, in a photo shoot titled “The Third Summer of Love”. After that, Kate was on her way to becoming the latest “It” girl, whose face and body would show up everywhere.

If someone could possibly not recognize Kate Moss from the slew of magazine covers she has graced, they surely would from all the advertisements she has appeared in. Kate practically became a staple in Calvin Klein ads, such as those for fragrances like Obsession, CK Be and CK One. The man behind these controversial ads, Calvin Klein, can be credited with launching Kate Moss’ career in the early ’90s. In addition to Calvin Klein ads, she has also appeared in ads for Burberry, Cerruti 1881, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, L’Oreal, and Yves Saint Laurent.

Kate has also strutted her stuff on the catwalks for such big-name designers as Calvin Klein, Chanel and Versace.

Moss also made her way onto the small and big screens. She appeared as herself in several episodes of the British comedy series French and Saunders in 1996, as well as in movies like Isaac Mizrahi’s Unzipped (1995), Catwalk (1996), Beautopia (1998), and Original Copies (1999). In 1999, she appeared as Maid Marian/Queen Marian in Blackadder Back & Forth

On May 1, 2007 a collection of clothes, designed by Moss exclusively for the Topshop chain, were launched across the UK in the chain’s 225 stores. A Kate Moss “countdown to launch” board filled a window of the company’s flagship Oxford Street store and on April 30, Moss launched the clothing line at Topshop in Oxford Street, where she briefly appeared in the shop window modelling a red dress from the clothing collection just before the shop was opened, causing a media frenzy.

Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks biography

Bio:
Prior to graduating from Immaculate Heart High School in 1991, she wanted to give modeling a try. She applied and was accepted at Loyola Marymount University, that Elite modeling agency gave the 17-year-old, her first modeling job. Afterwards, she had been rejected many times for modeling assignments, which led her to drop out of college so quickly.

Within Banks’s first week in Paris, other designers were so entranced by her presence on the runway that she was booked for an unprecedented 25 shows–a record in the business for a newcomer. She has done extensive print and/or runway work for fashion/advertising giants such as Anna Sui, Coors Light, CoverGirl, Badgley Mischka, Bill Blass, Cynthia Rowley, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Donna Karan, Gemma Kahng, H&M, Isaac Mizrahi, Maria Snyder, McDonald’s, Michael Kors, Milk, Nicole Miller, Nike, Inc., Oscar de la Renta, Pepsi, Perry Ellis, Randy Kemper, Richard Tyler, Rifat Ozbek, Swatch, Todd Oldham, Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria’s Secret, XOXO, and Yves Saint Laurent. She has appeared on the covers of such magazines as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, and Elle. Banks was the first African American woman on the covers of GQ and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. In 1997, she received the Michael Award for Supermodel of the Year. Also in ’97, she was chosen for the cover of the Victoria’s Secret catalog, making her the first African American to be so honored. Banks retired from modeling in May 2005 to concentrate on her television show. She walked the runway for the final time at the 2005 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. On numerous occasions, she has been sought after to appear in Playboy magazine; however, she has turned each request down.

Banks’ television career began on the fourth season of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, in which she played lead character Will’s ex-girlfriend Jackie Ames, and made eight appearances throughout the series. Other screen credits include Felicity, MADtv, Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out (in which she was featured as special guest host and team captain), and The Price Is Right (guest-starring as a Barker’s Beauty).

Currently, Banks can be seen on television as the hostess, head judge, and executive producer of the UPN (now the CW) television show America’s Next Top Model. In addition, she does double duty as the host of The Tyra Banks Show, a daytime talk show which premiered on September 12, 2005 and recently began its second season, drawing over 1.9 million viewers an episode. The show features stories about everyday people mixed in with celebrity interviews, much like the early format of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Under the slogan “Every woman has a story…and it happened to Tyra too”, Banks promotes her show using emotional flashbacks to her own childhood and adolescence. Many of the episodes deal with issues facing women today.

On the big screen, Banks has had minor roles in a few movies. Her first big screen role came in 1995 when she co-starred in the critically acclaimed drama Higher Learning. She went on to co-star with Lindsay Lohan in the Disney film Life-Size, playing a doll named Eve who comes to life. Other notable roles include 1999′s Love Stinks, 2000′s Coyote Ugly, and 2002′s Halloween: Resurrection.

In personal life she has previously been linked romantically to musical artist Seal, NBA players Rick Fox and Chris Webber, hockey player Mark Messier, and director John Singleton. She has said repeatedly that she has no plans on dating or getting married any time soon. Currently, she is enjoying the single life and has recently moved to New York City where she focuses on both of her TV shows.

Gisele Bundchen biography

Bio:
She’s been hailed by ROLLING STONE Magazine as THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD and confirmed her status in December 1999 as the most wanted face in fashion, when she was named VOGUE-VH1′s MODEL OF THE YEAR.

Born on the 20th of July, 1980, in Horizontina, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Gisele Caroline Bundchen grew up closely tied to her five sisters.

The arrival of Gisele on the international fashion scene, in 1996, was seen by many in the industry as the beginning of a new move away from the look-of-the-moment trend of harsh, edgy images into a softer, sexier phase. Actually, VOGUE credited Gisele’s work in the fashion industry as ‘The Return of the Sexy Model’.

The road to becoming today’s most requested model came as mere chance for Gisele. Although Gisele had set her sights on a career as a professional volleyball player or a veterinarian, she was discovered by Brazilian model scouts at the age of 14 while eating a hamburger in a diner during a school trip in Rio de Janiero.

Despite her father’s disagreement with her career choice, Gisele moved to the city. Two years later, she found herself in New York City.

Since her debut, she has been the face of a variety of advertising campaigns including several seasons of Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni, Versace, Celine, Givenchy, Bvlgari, Lanvin, Guerlain, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Earl Jean, Zara, Chloe, Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, and Victoria’s Secret. Bundchen is also the face of several Brazilian brands like Vivo, Brazil’s leading mobile company, Multiplan, Colcci and Credicard. After C&A Brazil hired her and started their television commercials, sales increased by 30%.

In May 2006, Bundchen signed another multi-million dollar deal, this time with American giant Apple Computer. She starred in an advertising campaign to promote the new Macintosh line through the Get a Mac advertisements. She has her own line of sandals with shoes company Grendene, called Ipanema Gisele Bundchen. Forbes puts her on 53rd of their list of the most powerful celebrities of 2007 due to the success of her popular shoe line, Ipanema. Custom Ipanema flip-flops sell for as much as $230 a pair. She is also the owner of a hotel in the south of Brazil, the Palladium Executive.

On May 1, 2007 it was announced that Bundchen had ended her contract with Victoria’s Secret. The New York Post’s Page Six reported that Bundchen had left Victoria’s Secret because it wouldn’t raise her $5 million-a-year salary. In July 2007, earning an estimated total of $33 million in the past 12 months, Forbes magazine named her the world’s top-earning model in the list of the World’s 15 Top-Earning Supermodels.

Karolina Kurkova biography

Bio:
Born in the town of Decin, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) on February 28th, 1984, Karolina Kurkova had a slight taste of what celebrity would be like, as her father Josef Kurka was a star basketball player. As a child, her height made her relatively awkward and gangly, but that would all change with age.

A close friend recognized her beauty and sent photos of Kurkova to an agency in Prague. Kurkova immediately landed a runway appearance, not to mention a commercial and print ad. Still, being a model in the Czech Republic did not expose her to what fashion was really about, so Kurkova took a chance and traveled to Milan to gain some more experience.

There, Miuccia Prada (the designer behind the famous brand name) signed her to a contract that proved to be the beginning of her stellar career. On September 7th, 1999, Kurkova’s hard work as a 15-year-old model culminated in a meeting with some Vogue editors in New York. She impressed them immediately and the execs began to slowly groom her for success.

A move to the Big Apple and hectic work schedule ensued. It all paid off when Kurkova finally made her presence known in the February 2001 issue of Vogue. One of the youngest models ever to grace its cover, the magazine helped propel her to stardom. She was now recognized at haute couture fashion shows and Victoria’s Secret

Beautiful Russian Models

October 2nd, 2011 by admin

Beautiful Russian models is an image of modern dreams and desires of West men, world become crazy for internet dating and thousands lonely hearts are looking for couples from other countries. Women from Russia and Ukraine search husbands from abroad, men from Europe and USA dreaming of beautiful Russian models. There is truthful theory – beautiful Russian models is great tender loving wife, caring mother for children and devoted to family, she is intelligent, beautiful, fantastic cook and lover; she has family values and dreams of cozy comfortable warm home where husband always want to come back after work and he knows that supper is waiting for him, and wife is ready to please him after hard day. Children are happy, couple is happy and everything is just like it should be, happy life, what else should we dream about. Marriage won’t make woman happy, may be it will, but not everyone, but if woman’s happiness is marriage exactly she should be careful and choose right man. She have to think who is she and what she except from life, the same with man – he should think and decide which woman is he looking for, mark goal and look for a woman with exact characteristics. It is not about beauty, it is about inner world, preferences and life style, but appearance is also important, usually men choose wife only by sexy body and nice face, it is a mistake. If you have same values and goals, you may get marry and live till death makes you apart, then you can create perfect union and family. So we can say that marriage with woman from Russia is very great action and not everyone is lucky to win such “jack pot” as loving, caring and beautiful Russian models.
